For the first 400-500 years of knitting’s history, the most common materials used were cotton and silk, not wool!

Cotton and silk were much more readily available in the Middle East than in Europe, which is where knitting is believed to have originated. If knitting had started in Europe, there’s a good chance wool would have been the go-to material from the very beginning!
